Our Favorite 90's Accessory is Back!

Some may love them, some may hate them—either way, they’re back!

Choker necklaces have been on the rage lately, and as a 90’s baby, I’m pretty excited.

Choker necklaces were definitely a staple in the 90’s. Britney Spears wore them. Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Call me crazy, but I think I remember spotting one on one of the Spice Girls.

Choker necklaces were awesome. They never hung in your food. They were always seen in your school photos. They came in just about every color. I’m pretty sure nearly every age group wore them too.

Kylie Jenner was the first one I saw wearing them last year. At first I was indifferent about the look, but once I bought a cute crop high-neck shirt like her, I was hooked. Now you can see chokers on famous fashion bloggers, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, and way more!

It’s true: fashion repeats itself. I’m kicking myself for getting rid of my chokers when I was younger. It’s okay though. I feel like the ones in store now are way cuter and trendy than the ones from the 90’s. Most of the chokers now are black and have small details. The key to the perfect choker seems to be simplicity, as well as a neutral color.

Not only will simplicity and neutrals go with more outfits, but it tends to keep outfits from looking too busy or matchy-matchy. You know what I’m talking about—when you see a person whose nail polish matches their bracelet, purse, shoes, and details in their shirt a little too perfectly. It’s nice to have things go together well, but being too-matched can seem overwhelming and look cheap at times.

Choker necklaces seem to be going best with high necklines. Think Kylie-inspired crop tops and pretty much any Brandy Melville top. Personally, I love chokers paired with with high-neck crop tops, high-neck maxi dresses, and some off-the-shoulder tops.

Either way, for inspiration on ways to wear choker necklaces, check out Kylie’s Instagram, POPSUGAR, and Fashion By He.

See you next Wednesday!
